SONVQ2012 Round 7 August 23, 2012

Posted in News on August 27th, 2012 by Nevada Chess

Rd 7 SONVQ2012

Going onto the last round, at least 8-9 players could tie for first place in different scenarios depending on the results of the games. David Pendergast allowed David Lucky to totally encroach on his position and it was over for him. Royce Pereira and Ryan Phillips both gave up their queens against Virgil Reyes and Glenn Bidari respectiful and Jeff Gallegos developed only a knight and queen and left his king in the center versus Hugo Santiago. Only at the last minutes of the time control did we know who would win and the queens prevailed over the pieces and dispite ingenious counterplay by Jeff, Hugo won a piece and the game. David Lucky won 1st place with 5.5/7…Hugo Santiago, Virgil Reyes, and Glenn Bidari finished tied at second with 5/7. Hugo also won the U1781-1303 section and this was pooled with the second place funds. Juan Pablo Jauregui won the U1938-1800 prize with 4.5/7. Paco Vela beat back Tim Galima’s piece sacrifice to take the 2nd U1938 section with 4/7. Royce Pereira won the 2nd U1781 prize with 4/7. Royce also won the beautiful chess set donated by Mike Thurber for his large 96 point rating increase. Hugo had a 91 point increase in rating.
In the undercard, Naomi Santiago went +4-2 to finish 1st there.
Many thanks to all the players who participated in this very powerful and memorable event…

SONVQ2012 rd 6

Posted in News on August 17th, 2012 by Nevada Chess

In rd six of the SoNVQ2012…David Lucky narrowly

defeated Ryan Phillips in a time scramble to win

before a throng of spectators. Hugo Santiago draw

Glenn Bidari (!) David Pendergast drew Jeff Gallegos,

Juan Jauregui rolled up Todd Imada and Virgil Reyes

takes Tim Galima’s bishop to win among the top

boards! The crosstable looks like a logjam with

players at 4.5 and 4/6.

Royce Pereira, Nevada’s representative at the Barbers Ch 2012 by Liceu Pereira

Posted in News on August 15th, 2012 by Nevada Chess

Hello all, this is a review of the Barber Tournament. As many of you may know, Royce

was the 2012 K-8 Nevada State Champion, and therefore earn the right to represent the

state of Nevada in the K-8 Barber Tournament of Champions.

In his first game, he was white against the Maryland Representative rated 1992. He is

the #44 14-year old in the country. The game was going well, until move 27. Bc1? Qb3!

The computer disagrees, but he felt his position felt apart after these moves,

especially considering the Qb3 came rather fast. He felt Bd6 would have been much

better.

Here is the game: 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. c3 Nf6 4. Be2 Nc6 5. d3 e6 6. O-O Be7 7. Be3

In the second game, he was black against the Illinois representative rated 2117. He is

the #11 11-year old in the country. This was probably Royce best game in his life.

After 41 moves, even though Royce felt he was slightly better, his opponent offered a

draw, and he accepted.

Here is the game: 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e5 3. dxe5 Ng4 4. Nf3 Nc6 5. Bf4 Bb4 6. Nbd2 Qe7 7.

In the third game, he was white against the Louisiana representative rated 1616 (and

one of the only two opponents rated below Royce.) This was a rather easy win for him.

He was ahead the whole game, and when 23. …. Rhf8? He countered with 24. Rg1 c4?

In the fourth game, he was black against the Arizona representative rated 1895. He is

the #22 11-year old in the country. He had played against this opponent twice before,

once in Vegas (loss), and once in Arizona (draw.) The game was pretty even until 31.

In the fifth game, he was white against the South Carolina representative rated 1931.

He is the #65 14-year old in the country. This was easily Royce’s worst game. After a

bad opening, things went downhill quickly. The best thing about this game was that,

afterwards, the two had an extensive post-mortem, and played some blitz games.

Going in this tournament, his first National Tournament (with the exception of the

West National Youth Action Tournament), I figured that he could score 2 out 6, and

that is what happened. While not a spectacular performance, I think he played well

(with the exception of the fifth game,) and with a few different moves, he could have

scored more points.

I apologize for not writing a more technical review, but my knowledge/skill of chess

does not permit. However, feel free to do so if you would like.

Most importantly, he seemed to have had fun, and enjoyed the experience.

After 5 rounds, Phillip Ryan increases his lead to a full point ahead of the field by beating Virgil Reyes. Glenn Bidari holds David Lucky to his third consequetive draw. Check out Paco Vela’s loss to Hugo Santiago on facebook…methinks Paco could have held a draw (with more time)with a horse and 4 pawns vs the Q and pawn…jon

after 4 grueling rounds, Ryan Phillips leads the So NV Q2012 with 3.5/4. Last night he defeated Jeff Gallegos in the final game to finish last night. Virgil Reyes held David Lucky to a draw (!) as well, rushing his pieces back to save his king with a series of ‘only’ moves. Lots of good chess in this very strong field….jon
