Eighteen players entered the lists for this tournament, which featured the new four round-two day format, at least for a couple months. This included 1 IWM, 4 X, and 13 class players with the median at 1735. Among the new players debuting were IWM Lilija Savicic, Expert John Carr, Michael Spillane, Allen Conrad from Las Vegas, and Dan Bradley from Washington.
The first round games featured no upsets. Jorge Barrios (2172) won a nice controlled game from Chad Badgett (1663). Lilija Savicic's (2172) debut game turned into a brawl when she won then returned a N to Russ Crenshaw (1699) to set mate on the 'h' file. John Carr (2196) played the "most beautiful of all openings", the Evans Gambit and quashed an inferior defense.
In round two, John Carr and John Brown (1958) played out to a dead draw, but featured a vicious time scramble, incomplete scoresheets, a magnanimous effort on your editor's part to bring you some sort of reconstruction from move 32-46, and some subtle technical play by both players. Mike Vannozzi (1513) won in 12 with a nice trap. Francisco Vela (1233?!) upset William Dobenen's (1489) Grob and Savicic elegantly combined to vacuum all of John Trivett's (1900) pieces off of the board.
In round three, Mike Landers (2109) sacrificed two pawns and played with great risk, but Barrios held firm and move to 3/3. Carr needed 18 moves and a kingside pawn storm to defeat Glen Buckendorf (1823). Alex Herrara (2000) and Savicic drew an instructive game. The lady knows how to move her horses. Brown beat off John Currell's (1804) attack elegantly and in two upsets, Vela won an impressive ending from Crenshaw and the Evans Gambit goes 2/2, this time in the hands of Vannozzi.
In the last round, Carr needed only 22 moves and another pawn storm to beat Barrios. Savicic hung her queen in desperate time pressure when she could not get an advantage over Brown with her N's, Vannozzi finishes with a good score by drawing Herrara, Trivett attracted the spectators when the talk spread that he had just sacced two pieces and was dead lost and then threw in a rook to mate Vela's king in the center of the board. Check out how the pawns on f2,e3, and d4 disappear. Buckendorf wins over the time pressured Badgett, Crenshaw wins and Ken Horne, playing hors concour thought he could refute Dobenen's Grob with Bf2+, Qh4+, but it didn't come to pass.
So John Carr and John Brown win with 3.5/4 and split the difference of the 1st Open and 1st U2000 prize. Alex Herrara and Jorge Barrios split the 2nd Open Prize with 3/4, John Trivett wins the U2000 prize with 2.5/4 and Mike Vannozzi wins the U1600 prize with 2.5/4.
