Southern Nevada Open, January 12-13, 2002

102 players turned out on Saturday, January 12th, for the Southern Nevada Open. Fifteen played in the Open Section, nine in the Under 1800 Section, and 78(!) in the Junior Section. Dan Conver definitely had his hands full directing the Junior Section.

Top-rated Dennis Marrero won the Open Section with a score of 4.5-0.5, a full point ahead of second place. Tied for second with 3.5-1.5 were Jorge Barrios, Jorge Franco, and Carmelo Fabia, who had the tournament of his life. Carmelo, rated 1682 at the beginning of the tournament, had a performance rating of 2080! Rounding out the list of prize-winners with 3-2 scores were Dennis Lardent and Rick Shepard (visiting from California).

First place in the Under 1800 Section ended in a tie at 4-1 between William Stevens and Ranen Lardent, who drew their individual matchup in the second round. Jorge Vela finished third with a score of 3-2. The remaining prize-winners, Michael Patraw, Genevieve Hayman, and Basil Zangare, finished tied with scores of 2.5-2.5.
