Reno Fall Scholastic, September 15, 2001
(Directed and reported by Ron Gentil)The Reno Fall Scholastic, individual and team, took place September 15th at the Boys' & Girls' Club. Same format as usual, one section, 5 Round SS, Game/30. Seventy-nine participated, representing 31 schools, grades 2 through 12. Before getting started we all had a moment of silence to reflect on the horrendous events that transpired earlier in the week in New York and Washington D.C.
Perfect scores were achieved by two players, Reman Child (Bishop Manogue HS) and Michael Patraw (Clover Valley Homeschool). Bragging rights and the trophy went to Reman who was victorious in the Game/5 playoff in front of a large group of spectators. The top unrated trophy went to Matthew Shafer, also of Bishop Manogue. There was a clear winner for the team championship trophy, Clover Valley. This team is made up predominantly of the Patraw family, all nine of whom drove up in their monster van from Las Vegas for this tournament. And I am glad they did, because Kim and Steve, along with all the other volunteers, were invaluable in helping out.
All players received key chains. Those achieving a plus score also got to choose from a large selection of prizes.
Free chess is available Saturdays from 10AM to 4PM at the Park Lane Mall.
