Reno Summer Scholastic, June 2, 2001
(Directed and reported by Ron Gentil)The Reno Summer Scholastic, one section G/30, was held on June 2nd at the Boys' & Girls' Club. Fortunately, it was held in the large gym, same as the State tournament, because there was an unexpectedly large turnout of 110 players, of which 52 were in their first tournament. Grades 1st through 12th from 30 different schools were represented.
Thanks to all of the volunteer help I was able to get the first round underway by 10 AM. Special thanks to Edgar Reyes (dad of Jonathan) for providing me with a PA system so I didn't have to shout like at the State tournament. A very special thanks to the Texas Longhorn Bar & Grill restaurant, "Best of the West" Rib Champions. As a community service, they catered, via their mobile BBQ wagon, a free lunch in the patio area for all the kids AND their parents. This was very professional. Lots of tasty food & drink, and the lines moved fast.
Dr. Jerry Howle stopped by during the lunch break and got a BBQ rib meal, so I put him to work (will work for food). He played a six board simul, giving up only one draw.
Perfect scores were achieved by three players: Jonathan Reyes (6th grade at Brown), Kevin Gafni (10th at McQueen), and Ryan Van Reken (9th at Reno High). Jonathan prevailed in a blitz playoff for the championship trophy and all the bragging rights. Top Unrated trophy went to Kyle Bryan (4 pts) from Pyamid Lake High. Team trophy went to Sparks High (16 pts). They were followed by Billinghurst MS (14 pts), Marvin Moss elementary and Jessie Beck elementary (12½ pts. each).
All players received key chains. The 49 players with plus scores were in the prize group. Jonathan chose first and took Igor, the talking chess computer. Other prizes were cash, Wild Water passes, sets, clocks, books, T-shirts etc. Jiemin Zhou (3rd at Marvin Moss) with 3 pts was the highest finisher of the 3rd grade & under group and chose a chess clock. He was very impressive for his first tournament, especially since his competition was mostly middle and high school players.
Summer chess will be each Thursday at the Farmers Market in Sparks (4 PM-dark in the kids area) and in Reno at the Park Lane Mall (1-5 PM Wed, Thur, Fri, downstairs in our Chess Center, and Saturdays 10 AM-4 PM in the main mall). And it's all free.
