2001 Nevada State Scholastic Championships

March 31, 2001

The 2001 Nevada Scholastic Championships, individual and team, were held in Reno, March 31st, at the Truckee Meadows Boys' & Girls' Club. One hundred forty-seven players, representing fifty-one schools, competed in four sections: K-3, K-6, K-8, and K-12. The format was 5SS, G/30. Assistant TDs were Allen Magruder and Dan Conver, who was invaluable on the computer. The tournament coincided with the Boys' & Girls' Club Family Day so an outdoor BBQ (in pleasant 70° weather) was provided for all, including parents and the many who volunteered. During the extended lunch break, two-time state champion, Edwin Straver, played a 27 board simul, winning all but two boards. Between rounds, players had complete use of the facilities, both indoor and outdoor. Some played basketball, some shot pool, and some watched the NCAA basketball tournament on a big screen TV. Next year's scholastic championships will be held in Las Vegas, which is traditional during the even numbered years.
