Reno Winter Scholastic, December 2, 2000

The Reno Winter Scholastic was held December 2, 2000, at the Truckee Meadows Boys' & Girls' Club. This was an individual and team competition with one section, five round Swiss, game in 30. Competing were 65 kids, grades 1 through 10, representing 23 schools.

The tournament was won outright with a single perfect 5.0 score by Paul Gafni, a 6th grader from Towles Elementary. Close behind with 4.5 points was another 6th grader, Jonathan Reyes, from Brown School. Seven players tied for 3rd - 9th place with 4 points: Kevin Gafni, Ryan Van Reken, Brandon Wimbley, Hollis Laird, Michael Patraw, Gabriel Kanzelmeyer and Richard Schultz. All players received their choice of a chess key chain. Players with a plus score also received their choice of an additional prize from a selection that included a chess computer, clocks, sets, books, etc.

Team honors went to Hunsberger Elementary (12.5), followed by Billinghurst Middle School (11.5), Clover Valley home school (10), and Dilworth Middle School (10).

The Nevada Scholastic Individual and Team Championships will be held at this venue on March 31, 2001. Casual play is available Monday through Saturday in Reno at the Park Lane Mall. For more info, contact Ron Gentil (775) 342-0341.
