Ken Horne Memorial Open, September 16-17, 2000

(Directed by Norm Harvey)

A diverse field of eleven players entered this event, dedicated to the memory of one of Nevada's most influential chess representatives. In round one no upsets were possible, all the higher rated players won. Round 2 featured several key matchups: Denis Marrero and Tom Thrush won over Jorge Barrios and Inocencio Baligad, respectively. Alan Amici had Grover Gray totally busted, almost in zugzwang, but a bad move forced the game into a B+P ending that Grover converted with technical finesse.

In round 3, Marrero and Gray were paired, and Gray managed to draw in a very complex rook ending, in severe sudden death time pressure. Jose Ramirez easily scored to move with Barrios ½ pt behind the leaders. In round 4, Marrero tripped up Thrush's attack, winning a trapped knight and the game in 37 moves. Barrios won to stay within ½ pt of Denis, along with Gray's bye. Amici won over Charles Hatherill to have the best score of the class players under 1800, at 2.5/4.

In the last round, Marrero and Baligad drew. Gray sacrificed pieces to beat Barrios in the other key first-place game. Amici drew Ron Plattner to secure his class prize. Ramirez lost to Thrush in a heavy piece ending, running out of time in sudden death. And Lawrence Totaro scored over James Ferreira in a long forcing sequence. The prize distribution: Denis Marrero and Grover Gray won the 1st Open prize with 4/5. Grover was also the 1st under 2200. Alan Amici was the 1st under 1800 with 3/5. Ron Plattner was 1st U1400 with 2.5/5. Marrero and Amici took home the championship trophies.
