CCSN Player's Open, February 27-28, 1999

This tournament was not a Grand Prix event, was supposed to be the a two section tournament. However, only three players signed up to play in the open section and the U1800 section had 8 players signed up, so by mutual agreement, the tournament was held as a one section tournament, but the prize funds were kept mutually exclusive of one another, so say the U1800 had its prize fund based on that number of players entered in it and the same for the open. There were many new debutants, including Ranen Lardent (1380), Shane Solomon (1114/5), Kris McKinster (1094/5), Katrina Scheel (809/5), all scholastic players; Rogelio Savendal (UNR) and in the second round Alberto Bosch (1995/11). Other players, debuting for the year 1999 included Tom Thrush (2159), Alex Herrera (2035), Ken Sims (1555), Francisco Vela (1569), and Alan Amici (1340).
The first round featured no real upset but Sevandal defeated Lardent from the Black side of a hedgehog and in round two, some players were wondering, "who is this guy?" as he defeated Vela by tearing into his kingside. Herrera went 2/2 with a carefully executed assault on hapless John Trivett's (1891) Pirc transposition. At 1.5/2 were Thrush and Sims.
In round three, Sevandal was defeated by Herrera while Thrush won when Sims tried to resort to a desperate attack after subtly losing a piece. And Scheel upset McKinster to score her first win.
The fourth round brought a change in the leaders, as Thrush's Caro Kann scored in 34 moves when he won the exchange from Herrera. Sevandal won a long carefully played R+P ending from Bosch, and Solomon, as young as he is, had learned the art of the GM draw with Amici.
In round five, Thrush obtained a lousy position against Sevandal and not even an exchange sacrifice brought relief. Rogelio got up, looked at the crosstable, came back and offered a draw. Tom later commented he had the fastest hand ever to accept a draw. Trivett offered a draw to Vela who got up from his chair and moved immediately. Five powerful moves later, Trivett was offered a draw and after a long think, found the winning combination. Vela commented later he never heard the draw offer and to next time, "shout". Bosch beat Lardent amd Sims won against an unsound attack from McKinster. Katrina Scheel pulled off a real upset, winning over Amici when a sudden attack appeared out of the blue on his uncastled king. And Norm Harvey (1841), playing as the 'horse' was easily winning against Solomon, when he all of the sudden gave his extra queen away. Luckily, in the ensuing Q+P ending, Solomon hung his own queen to a skewer. When asked later, "Why did you give up your queen?" Norm simply and innocently said "I just didn't see it."
The prize winners in the tournament were: Open: 1st Tom Thrush 4/5, 2nd Alex Herrera and John Trivett 3.5/5. In the U1800 section, Rogelio Sevandal was first with 3.5/5 and second prize was shared between Francisco Vela, Ken Sims, and Katrina Scheel (!!) with 2.5/5.
