CCSN Rebel Open, February 13-14, 1999

(Sponsored by the Southern Nevada Chess Club, directed by Norm Harvey)

Trivett and Winberg tie

This tournament was supposed to be the second of six for the Southern Nevada Grand Prix and a total of four (?!) players showed up to to play.

After a brief discussion of the state of affairs of the moment, several of the players elected to just cancel the event and just go home so all the players got their entry fee back. The director, Norm Harvey wanted to have some sort of event but nobody wanted to play a regular rating event at a fast time control, so Norm suggested a Quickplay G/29 rated at the Quick Chess rating. Charles Hatherill, who walked in just to spectate, offered up the rating fee and the game was afoot!

All of the games were drawn in round one. In round two, Jose Ramirez (1802) won from the black side of a King's Gambit when Hatherill (1587) castled into a mate net to lead. In round three, John Trivett (1891) played an insane sacrifice that was deftly refuted by Ramirez and the game was decided in a last ditch attack replete with blunders in the time scramble in Trivett's favor. Winberg's victory in the French Poisoned Pawn was more controlled with the passed 'h' pawn winning the day. No prizes were awarded, just a nice Saturday afternoon quad to while away the time. Scores: Trivett, Winberg 2/3; Ramirez 1.5/3; Hatherill .5/3 Maybe these players will be awarded the Grand Prix points for showing up to play!

Enjoy!
