Southern Nevada Open, January 16-17, 1999

(Sponsored by the Southern Nevada Chess Club, directed by Allen Magruder)

Once he drew a GM, and now he wins a Grand Prix tournament!! John Currell romps

This event was the first tournament of six in the Southern Nevada Grand Prix and the turnout was mighty low. Only six (?!) players entered the list in the premiere event of the year. All six players were class players including 3 A, 2 B, and 1 D player. No masters, no experts, no nothing, in fact your editor John Trivett was the highest rated at (1907). But rating had nothing to do with the play of the day as John Currell (1800) defeated Mike Cassidy (1278), Jose Ramirez (1742), Chad Badgett (1726), and drew Lee Shepherd (1877) by insufficient losing chances just seconds away from his flag falling to win a full point ahead of the field with 3.5/4.

After the first round, a discussion was held with the players to decide how many more rounds and at what time control to play in order to expedite the event (and to watch football on Sunday!) and the tournament ended up becoming a 4 round G/60 event in order to finish up in one day.

Lee Shepherd (1877) and Jose Ramirez (1726) tied for the second Open prize with 2.5/4 and Ramirez also won the First U1800 prize. Shepherd had to defeat Currell to share first place but he couldn't.

Chad Badgett (1726) took the 2nd U1800 prize with 1.5/4. He drew Trivett a rook down in the first round and his last round game with Ramirez was typical one. Chad attacks and Jose finds all those defensive resources to survive.

Mike Cassidy (1278) won the 3rd U1800 prize 1/4. He lost his first three games in his uncompromising style and then was dead lost against Trivett in the first half of the game but he hung on to outplay Trivett and win, a rating upset of about 625 points!

John Trivett (1907) was 1/4 and suffered from time difficulties and manus lapsus, giving his queen to Shepherd and giving a queen to Cassidy. He went home broke.

The very few comments are mine, My apologies for any errors herein. Enjoy.
