CCSN Winter Open, December 12-13, 1998

(Directed by Ken Sims)

And theerrrree off and Jorge Barrios wins by a mile.

Yea, yea, it started off like a horse race when you're all even at the gate but it wasn't even close. Jorge Barrios (2164) won again with a CLEAN SCORE of 5-0. Only nine players entered the lists, (1 M, 1X, and 7 class players), including one new player, Lee Shepherd (1877), from LV by way of Phoenix, AZ. This was his first tournament since about 1983. This tournament also featured several upsets of note and a host of byes and withdrawals.

In round one, Jose Ramirez (1792) upset Alex Herrara (1993) and Chad Badgett drew Frank Gray (1916).

In round two, Chad drew John Trivett (1907) in a fierce Max Lange Attack and 9 year old Alan Amici (1235) drew Shepherd!

In round three, Alan drew Trivett(!!!) in a mistake riddled game and actually was winning at one point and even Trivett missed winning at the end. And Jorge was 3-0 beating Alex Herrera.

In round four, Jorge won over Gray, saccing the exchange to do it and Shepherd won with a well conducted attack against Ramirez and so Jorge had first place locked up and Shepherd looked to take second place as he was 1.5 points behind Barrios and 1 point ahead of the rest of us.

In the last round, strange things happened. First, Jorge was awarded the last point by forfeit and so he goes 5-0. Then Shepherd overlooks a mate in one in an ultrasharp Poisoned Pawn Sicilian and gets mated in a Trivy quickie so he kisses second overall goodbye and your editor magically appears into prize list. And Badgett plays another theoritical discussion of the Moller Attack versus Ramirez (continued from last month's debacle), contrives a winning attack, and falls into desperate time pressure with 2 minutes for 20 moves, compared to Jose's 15 minutes left and it was Jose who flagged out on move 32 as Chad threw piece after piece sacrifice in a last ditch attack to hunt down Jose's harried king.

In the prize distribution, Jorge Barrios won the 1st Open with 5-0. The 2nd Open was split between John Trivett, Lee Shepherd, and Chad Badgett with 2.5-2.5. Shepherd and Badgett also tied for the 1st U1900 prize.

I'd like to thank Ken Sims for the crosstables and prize distibution. All the notes are mine, all mine. My apologies for any errors herein.
