CCSN Autumn Open, November 14-15, 1998(Directed by Norm Harvey)Who is this guy?? Jose Ramirez takes second but Jorge Barrios wins another one! Only ten players entered the lists for this tournament, including 3 X and 7 class players. There were two new faces in our monthly series. Dan Soriano (1377) playing for the first time in some twenty years and Howard Levine (1971). This was one of those tournaments where a relatively new player, playing with a provisional rating bursts to the forefront, blowing away some of the best players in town and the new kid to watch out for is Jose Ramirez (1792/4, but more improved than this). Round one began with Jose defeating of all people, top ranked Jorge Barrios (2160)! In the second round, Jose took several pawns and beat off Chad Badgett's Moller Attack. Alex Herrera (2013) sent John Trivett (1906) retreating in a badly played Evans to win and Howard Levine (1971) moved to 2/2 with a sharp attack. And the very dangerous Mike Cassidy (1255) scored against Soriano with one move at the end after being given up for lost most of the game. The third round saw Alex move to 3/3 all by himself by pounding on a weak e6 pawn in a heavy piece ending. Jorge Barrios moved to 2/3 along with Trivett and Levine while Jose took a 1/2 bye. In round four, Jose defeated third ranked Alex Herrera to move to 3.5/4, Barrios won a bishop ending and John Brown (2026) moved out of the cellar after two crushing defeats by winning a bishop ending versus Mike Vannozzi (1539). In the last round, Jose was paired with John Brown and right out of the opening, he had an aberration and absented-mindedly took his own horse with his own bishop. John took the bishop and at the end to his horror, Jose was a piece down, so he resigned. But the exchanges was an illegal move and because Jose resigned, the game was scored a win for John. Laughter broke out for a good ten minutes and so Trivett saw fit to draw painlessly with Levine. Herrera had his aberration and pinned Barrios's queen with his bishop only to see QxB loses a piece. Vannozzi played a Soltis Dragon to outplay Chad Badgett (1667) but he too had an aberration and found himself a piece down in a very difficult ending that he just managed to draw. And Norm Harvey (1841) playing hors concours beat Cassidy. So in the prize distribution, Jorge Barrios won the Open Prize with 4/5. Jose Ramirez was clear second with 3.5/4 but took the 1st U1800 prize. The 2nd Open prize was split between Alex Herrera, John Brown, and John Trivett with 3/5. And Chad Badgett took the 2nd U1800 prize with 2/5. I'd like to thank Alex Herrera for notes to his games, Ken Sims for the crosstables and all you folks who wondered where the bulletin was at! All other comments are mine. Enjoy the bulletin.
