North vs South Team Match, Saturday, October 3, 1998

Nevada State Quick Chess Championship Tournament, Sunday, October 4, 1998

(Directed by Allen Magruder)

Reno reps repo everything

It began just shortly after Allen Magruder had passionately said, "Every game should begin with a handshake and end with a handshake", that the annual state championships for 1998 began in Tonopah, Nevada at the Station House Hotel at 11 am, Saturday, October 3rd. Edwin Straver (2170) had survived a series of tournaments and matches to represent Reno in his third attempt against Thomas Thrush (2150), who qualified as the runner up in the Southern Nevada Grand Prix for Las Vegas. The first two games with a regular time control (40/120, SD/60) ended with a win for each player.

In the first game, Straver built up a large space advantage and just when Thrush broke the chains of his restrained position, he blundered the exchange away; and in game two, Thrush convincingly refuted a long combination and the match moved to a playoff.

The next two games were at G/15 and in game three, Thrush gained a winning advantage almost immediately winning a piece and then he made an illegal move which gave his harried opponent 2 extra minutes. In the scramble that followed, Thrush could have won with a knight check but the game was ended with bare kings and a draw. In game four, both players repeated the strategy of game one, but this time there was a draw.

So now the match moved to a G/5 series, and in game 5, Straver defended well to win on time, and in game 6 Thrush played with typical uncompromise and threw forward all his pieces against Straver's king and both sides exchanged down to a R and P ending where only the fastest passed pawn would decide the championship and Straver mated Thrush to become 1998 Nevada State Champion in what was the longest playoff match ever recorded 1-1,1-1, 2-0.

The annual Las Vegas-Reno match was also played in conjunction with the state championship and this particular match quietly celebrated its tenth anniversity to the astonishment to several of the players who have played in all ten matches! Following is the lineup and the scores with the Las Vegas team on the left and the Reno team on the right which was played on ten boards.

Board 1 Mike Bruns (2050)-Jerome Weikel (2100): Bruns won the first game with a vicious attack and playing the second game under protest, having by move 16 only 20 minutes left to the time control and being reduced to making moves on his last two ranks to lose. Score 1-1
Board 2 Alex Herrara (2050)-David Sheryka (2050): Herrara threw away a winning R+P ending to draw in game one and in game two, Sheryka had 1:30 for 10 moves and made move 40 with two seconds to spare, but he didn't last long after that. Score 1.5-.5
Board 3 John Brown (2000)-D. Welmers (2000): Welmers appears to have sacrificed a piece for the attack but an active defense saw this game simplify to a draw. In game two, in a French Tarrasch, Welmers sacrificed two pawns for the attack and this game went to the end of sudden death time in a N+P ending where Brown's extra pawns carried off the day in 71 moves. Score 1.5-.5
Board 4 John Trivett (1950)-Edwin Simanus (1900): In game one, Trivett threw away his game in with terrible time pressure blunders to lose on time and in game two, he played with great risk only to offer a draw in a tense position to call it a day. Score .5-1.5
Board 5 John Currell (1800)-G. Fischer (1875): In game one Currell was a pawn up in a N vs. B ending but Fischer's active king held the draw. In game two, Currell fell to the a Sicilian Dragon counterattack to lose. Score .5-1.5
Board 6 Ed Silakowski (1750)-Ron Gentil (1750): Gentil were two miniatures that he swept away to win. Score 0-2
Board 7 Ken Horne (1700)-W. Case (1700): The Bird's Opening transformed into a Grand Prix attack Case won. In game two, a tactical maelstrom took place that ended when Horne blundered in mate. Score 0-2
Board 8 Jose Ramirez (1690)-M. Filipas (1500): In game one, Ramirez charged up the QB file to pin a piece and win and in game two, Filipas could have capped up his fine attack with 27. Qf5 or Ng6 winning immediately, but harried by time pressure, he fell to the counterattack. Score 2-0
Board 9 Alan Amici (1266)-N. Wyatt (1269): A most interesting pairing, featuring the 8 year old Amici versus the senior Wyatt. Game one was a quick draw and in game two, Amici patiently played to win the R+P ending with connected passed pawns in the center. Score 1.5-.5
Board 10 Allen Magruder (1650)-E. Artega (1400): The T.D. himself took a board in his first tournament game in one and a half years and won in style over Artega. In game two, Artega struck back, sacrificing a piece on in a blocked position to elegantly win the ending. Score 1-1

In the first round, the match was tied 5-5 but Reno edged ahead in round two by at first a two point margin that was cut to one point by John Brown's very long victory over D. Welmers so the Reno wins 5.5-4.5 so that the final score was Reno 10.5 Las Vegas 9.5 and Reno gets to take back home the the very heavy three foot trophy that trades off between the two cities for the last ten years. And still late into the night was the annual board meeting for Nevada Chess Inc.

On Sunday, Oct 4th, 12 players arrived, some struggling, at 9 a.m. to enter the Nevada Quickplay Championship. At first, the discussion got no where on the format but finally Magruder announced that it would be a five round swiss, G/15. The tournament was over in three hours and Edwin Straver took top money and another Championship trophy with 4.5/5. John Brown and Ron Gentil split the 2nd prize money with 4/5. Brown won the U2000 trophy and Gentil won the U1800 trophy. The U1600 trophy was won by youngest trophy winner ever, the eight year Alan Amici with 3/5. Other scores were Fischer 3/5; Currell, Filipas, Horne, Ramirez, and Silakowski 2/5; Trivett 1.5/5; and Artega 0/5. Your editor managed to play fast, write fast and lose fast to include some games. And it seems every year, the Fried Liver Attack claims a victim as it was in Ramirez-Artega in the last round.

I'd like to thank the Station House Hotel and Casino in Tonopah, Nevada for hosting the event and Ken Horne for his technical assistance.
