Fifteen players entered the lists for this tournament including 3 M, 2X, and 10 class players. This particular tournament's past history always seems to have one player who runs away with the whole thing, and this year, it was John Brown (1926), playing some of his best chess in a long time (in fact all year this year), who took top honors all alone this year a full point ahead of the rest of the field, going 3.5/4 against the top four seeds.
In round one, at an acclerated time control (G/60) all of the higher rated players won. Harvey Bradlow (2278) got tough resistance from Glen Buckendorf (1800) and the Sicilian Dragon would claim the first of three victims in a topical tussle when Mike Bruns (2065) snatched back his sacrificed piece from Chad Badgett (1663).
In round two, Bruns won a pawn and had a better ending against Ron Gross (2283), but he blundered the exchange away, Brown forced Bradlow to concede in just 13 moves and Harvey dropped out of the tournament, and Badgett would begin a run from last place to a top finisher by defeating John Currell (1804) when John overestimated the power of his distant passed pawn.
In round three, Brown held on to draw against John Carr's (2201) imaginative play, Jorge Barrios (2114) got all tied up against Ron Gross (2283) and lost, and Francisco Vela (1233/5) (??) ran his king all over the board to escape John Trivett's (1926) marauding pieces after a time scramble to draw, with both sides missing wins all through the game.
In round four, Brown meets his third master and wins the R+P ending versus Gross (the second win for John over Ron this year). Barrios played powerfully to force Carr's resignation and Vela upset Currell.
In the last round (ahh yes, we are back to our five round format) Brown neutralized the kingside threats of Barrios and in the end, used a stairstepping series of checks to win, Gross and Carr drew a tactical game, Bruns conjured up kingside stormclouds against Vela's king and won with a brilliant combination, Trivett could have won, but he kept on blundering and finally resigned with against the resourceful Badgett's Sicilian Dragon and Buckendorf defeated Jose Ramirez (U).
In the prize placement, John Brown won the first Open with 4.5/5, the second Open prize was split between Mike Bruns and Ron Gross with 3.5/5. Chad Badgett also tied in this group with 3.5/5 and took the 1st U2000 prize. Glen Buckendorf won the 2nd U2000 prize with 2.5/5 and shared placing with Francisco Vela (1233/5), who was also the 1st U1700 prizewinner. Owing to last round forfeits and withdrawals, the 2nd U1700 prize was vacant.
