CCSN Sizzler Open, August 22-23, 1998
(Directed by Ken Sims)Bradlow leads the pack and wins
Seventeen players entered the lists for this event and three more players acting as house man brought the tally up to twenty players. This included 2 M and 5X and several new players; the very young Alan Amici (1163), E. Biggs, J. Caplan, J. Ramirez, and D. Yeazel.
In the first round, there were no upsets. Mike Bruns (2065) played a nice attack to defeat John Currell (1804) and Francisco Vela (1233) forced John Carr (2196) in the last game to finish in the round.
In the second round, Harvey Bradlow (2278) manage to defeat a time pressured Bruns, and John Brown (1933) held on to defeat Tom Thrush (2116) in a time scramble. Jorge Barrios (2114) drew the top rated Ron Gross (2283), back with a creditable performance in the US Masters in Hawaii, and Alex Herrera (2008) drew Carr in a very complex game. John Trivett (1900) and Currell played a game in which both side missed lots of wins and in the end it was drawn. Jordan Caplan (U) drew the Nevada Scholastics Champion, Anthony King (1438) in one of those crazy Dragon endings and Vela sacrificed with the classical Greek gift to win beautifully.
In round three, Brown played the Blackmar Diemer and had a chance to lock up Bradlow's queen and throw away the key but he lost. Herrera outplayed Gross and they drew, and Carr blew away Barrios. Bruns played a wonderful R and P ending to beat Vela.
In the last round, the two top boards registered quick draws, but on the next two, everyone was out to win and so Herrera handed over tons of material in the face of a devastating discovered check to lose to Brown and Trivett down to 17 moves to make in 5 minutes lost all his pieces in a kamikaze attack to lose to Bruns. Barrios won with a nice move, Vela lost on time to King in a very riveting game, and Alan Amici scored with a lightening attack to mate Dale Yeazel's (U) king with style.
Harvey Bradlow won with 3.5/4, and 2nd Open, 1st and 2nd U2100 prize was split between John Carr, Mike Bruns, and John Brown with 3/4. Anthony King took the 1st U1600 prize with 2.5/4. Albert Baron and Jose Ramirez split the 2nd U1600 and 1st Unrated, respectively with 2/4 and Jordan Caplan was 2nd Unrated with 1.5/4.
And starting next month, we go back to a 5 round tournament held on two days. Whoopee!!
