CCSN IRS Open, Apr 17-19, 1998

There were 13 players at this tournament, which included Ken Horne who served as house man and also provided computer support for pairings and reports. The number of players did not prove unlucky, as all players scored at least one win or two draws. And it certainly was not unlucky for Denis Marrero (2280), who took 1st place with a perfect score of 5.0.

Because of the low number of players and the color combinations, top rated Marrero met the second highest rated player, Jorge Barrios (2186), in the second round. Here Barrios suffered his only defeat, taking 2nd place with a score of 4.0. There were a couple of upsets in the second round with Richard Risley (1517) defeating Stan VerNooy (1616) and Chad Badgett (1641) got the win from Walter Henry (1800).

Round 3 was the round for draws. Marrero and Barrios both won their games; all of the other games were draws!

In round 4 Michael Vannozzi (1505) snatched victory from the jaws of defeat with a knight fork in the endgame. Giving up the point was VerNooy.

In round 5 Vannozzi eked out a draw against Ken Horne (1673), which gave him a tie for 1st place in the Under 1700 category with Badgett, each with 2.0 points.

In the Under 2000 category Glen Buckendorf (1822) took 1st with 3.0 and James Brailsford (1726) took 2nd with 2.5.
