Veteran's Day Open, Nov 7-9, 1997

We had 16 players play in this tournament. We had three masters, three experts, six As, two Bs, one C, and one D for an average of 1900.

We had a guest from California. He was Dr. Steven Holtz who is a neurologist. He was here to give some lectures on his field of medicine.

We had one upset in round one. John Brown 1900 upset a 2218 master.

In round two Laymond McGauhey 1729 upset a 1954 A player.

In round three Laymond McGauhey 1729 upset a 1888 A player.

When computers became stronger players did not want to play them. Now I am hearing that people don't want to play the red-heads because they have become strong.

In round four John Brown drew with a 2210 master. This was his second upset of a master in this tournament.

In round five the TD had to make a God awful pairing: Laymond McGauhey vs Princess McGauhey. No matter how hard the TD tried he could not make any switches.

The prize winners for this tournament were:

Open First: Dennis Marrero 2364.

Open 2nd: Jorge Barrios 2210.

Under 2000: New to Las Vegas, Lorin Miesse 1886.

Under 1850: first: the upset King red-head, Laymond McGauhey 1729.
